A blog about implementing technology into modern classrooms

Leaping Obstacles With Technology in the Special Needs Classroom

In both mainstream and specialist settings,  students with special needs benefit from a variety of technologies designed to enhance their learning.  Before deciding which technologies to implement into the learning program, each individual child needs to undergo careful assessment.  In a special needs group class for example, each child in the room will be requiring…

Gamification and Digital Escape Rooms

A big buzz word in education right now is Gamification. But Gamification is not as simple as just sitting kids in a computer lab or on ipads to play educational games. Gamification is an interactive approach that requires both independence and team work. Gamification takes ordinary tasks and regular classroom activities and routines and transforms…

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Tech In Classroom Learning

It is very timely, as I explore this topic, that my own son was featured in the newspaper this week on the very topic of incorporating technology into the classroom.  I have 6 year old twin boys who are non verbal and attending a special development school.  Their entire class is non verbal, so there…

Evolving technology in the classroom

Although there are both pros and cons regarding the use of technology in the classroom, the reality of modern society is that technology in the classroom can no longer be dismissed or avoided entirely and to deprive young learners of technology as part of their learning would be downright neglectful.  Children are now born into…

About Me

Hi, I am Jean. I am a Mum of 4 energetic boys aged between 4 and 18. The youngest 3 all on the Autism Spectrum. I have a background in editing, linguistics and ESL teaching. I stopped teaching a couple of years ago, when one of my younger children needed open heart surgery. I am currently a full time carer and student, with a goal of becoming a Speech Pathologist.

What is this blog about?

I am currently studying a Grad Cert in Education (Autism Studies) and am completing this blog as part of a unit on Technology in Education. This unit is not only about technology in a special needs setting, but in educational settings across the board. I do however have a personal interest in technology use in the special needs classroom, on one hand because that is my specialised area of study and on the other hand because I have two children currently enrolled in a specialist school who rely on technology such as AAC apps as part of their every day life. I also have a long term plan of working as a Speech Pathologist, so will be implementing this kind of technology as part of that role.
